Innovation & Enterprise

Welcome to the Innovation and Enterprise Faculty.

 The Innovation and Enterprise Faculty is a newly formed faculty that incorporates Accounting, Business, Economics, (ICT) Information, Communication and Technology and (IPT) Information, Processing and Technology.

Primarily we are a faculty that collectively offer critical subjects which will significantly assist students to experience success in communities and workplaces of the 21st Century. Our programs provide the financial, economic, business, entrepreneurial and ICT literacy skills necessary.

What do we teach?

All courses offered by the Innovation and Enterprise faculty are developmental in nature and have been carefully planned across the year levels from Year 7 to Year 12.

ICT literacy is a significant thread through all our programs providing students with the ability to use technology to develop 21st century content knowledge and skills.

We strongly believe that students must be able to use ICTs so that they know how to learn, think critically, solve problems, use information, communicate, innovate and collaborate. Students will need to make effective and innovative use of what they know throughout their lives.

Accounting

Senior Accounting is course designed not only to provide a foundation in the discipline of accounting but also to prepare students for further education, training and employment. Accounting focuses on the processes involved in generating, recording, classifying, analysing, interpreting and reporting accounting information as a basis for planning, control and effective decision making. Students are provided with opportunities to develop skills in managing financial resources that they can apply at both a personal and business level.

Business Organisation and Management (BOM)

Senior BOM is a course designed not only to provide a foundation in the discipline of Business but also to prepare students for further education, training and employment. This subject gives students the opportunity to study business organisations, their management and their effectiveness. BOM provides the student with a broad knowledge of business and its place in our society.

Business, Communication and Technology (BCT)

Senior BCT is a course designed not only to provide a foundation in Business administration and practices but also to prepare students for further education, training and employment. It is an Authority / ‘OP’ subject which also enables completion of units of competency to achieve Certificate II in Business. At our school, these topics/units will revolve around the following business contexts: Retail, Travel, Real Estate, Health Care, Tourism & Hospitality, Events Management and Entertainment

Economics

Senior Economics is a course concerned with examining the way in which societies have designed systems to manage their scarce resources. Throughout the course, particular emphasis will be given to the way in which the Australian economy has dealt with this issue of scarcity and the economic institutions that have emerged to combat the problem. When examining this issue, students will be encouraged to take an interest in the current affairs environment, so as to develop a thorough understanding of the contemporary issues of relevance to the Australian economy.

Information, Processing and Technology (IPT)

Senior IPT is a course designed to immerse students in 21st Century skills, computers and associated technologies that are prevalent in virtually every field of human endeavour. It emphasises problem identification and solution rather than the use of specific applications, and is an intellectual discipline that involves a study of information and intelligent systems, software and system engineering, human-computer interaction, and the social and ethical issues associated with the use of information technology.

Year 9 Business

Year 9 Business Studies is a year long course which focuses on business from a consumer’s point of view. The course provides students with the practical skills and knowledge to manage the resources and services available to them and to be aware of their rights and responsibilities as consumers. Topics of study include: Money Management, Insurance, Travel, Employment, Law and Consumer Rights and Responsibilities.

Year 8 Business

Year 8 Business is a semester long course which introduces students to basic business concepts which can be applied at both a personal and business level. Through an integrated project with Food Technology, students gain real world experience in the operations and management of a business.

Year 10 Show Me the Money

This subject is designed to introduce students to the dynamic world of finance. The first term of study focuses on personal financial management including money-making and investment ideas as well as spending options. The second term of study focuses on introducing students to the excitement of business accountancy.

Year 10 Venturing into Business

This subject is designed to introduce students to work environments and business ventures. It is a practical and useful unit for any person, regardless of the career path they intend choosing, as it provides opportunities for completion of practical tasks that build up knowledge and skills relevant to any work environment. It also provides students with team skills developed with their peers while undertaking a real business venture.

Year 10 Taking Care of Business

This subject is designed to give students an introduction to small business management. The unit studies the 10 steps of small business set-up and students undertake a project to establish their own, hypothetical small business. The course also looks at International business and provides an Introduction to the law. It provides students with a taste of the senior subjects of Business Organisation and Management (BOM) and Legal Studies.

Year 8, 9 & 10 Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) School of Excellence

The Class of Excellence – ICT, is an invitation only subject offered to year 8, 9 and 10 students as part of the SCGS School of Excellence in Information, Communication and Technology. 

The subject in Year 8 & 9 consists of a two year program in which students will study a wide range of topics and gain experience in areas such as; Image management and manipulation, animation, programming, web page and multimedia authoring, networks and basic maintenance of a computer, video authoring, editing and special effects.

In Year 10 it is a one year program that introduces student to Information, Processing and Technology (IPT). The focus is primarily on interactive game design and programming.

The Innovation and Enterprise Faculty is committed to preparing students for a change dominated, technology driven world.

Our programs aim to produce students who:

Are aware of future world scenarios and the impact of these on their future lives, issues such as; global warming, global resource inequities, diminishing oil reserves, technology that could potentially exceed human intelligence, world population explosion and the emergence of new powerful countries, to name a few.

Can have knowledge and understanding critical to their success in future communities and workplaces. Specifically: global awareness, financial, economic, business and entrepreneurial literacy.

Can know how to keep learning and make effective and innovative use of what they know. Use critical thinking and problem-solving skills, communication skills, creativity and innovation skills, collaboration skills, contextual learning skills, information and media literacy skills.

Can demonstrate an ability to use technology to learn content and skills so that they know how to use this to learn, think critically, solve problems, use information ethically, communicate, innovate and collaborate.

Can effectively demonstrate a range of interpersonal skills; leadership, teamwork and people skills in a variety of situations.

Can effectively organise their time, work responsibly and cooperatively with others.
