SCGS Mathematics

Welcome to the Mathematics faculty.

Mathematics is a powerful tool for letting us understand the world we live in. It is an integral part of a general education. Mathematical applications are part of our daily lives and form the basis of our quest to improve the world we live in. They underpin science and technology, most industry, trade and commerce, social and economic planning and communication systems and are an essential component of effective participation in a rapidly changing society.

At Sunshine Coast Grammar School great emphasis is placed on the study of Mathematics. All students are required to study a course of Mathematics in every year of their schooling. We have a vision to encourage students to be innovative, to use technology, to be able to work in teams and to enjoy the practicality and purity of mathematics.

What do we teach?

The Years 1 to 10 Mathematics Syllabus is organized into five strands:

  • Number
  • Patterns and Algebra
  • Measurement
  • Chance and Data
  • Space

When teaching mathematics we encourage students to see connections and relationships between the strands. This is done in both real-life and purely mathematical situations.

The Mathematics Faculty aims to provide the opportunity for student development of:

  • knowledge, procedures and essential skills
  • modelling and problem-solving strategies
  • the capacity to justify and communicate in a variety of forms.

The Mathematics School of Excellence at our school provides opportunities for high ability students with a positive approach to Mathematics to appreciate and experience the dynamic nature of the subject.

The School of Excellence currently offers the course “Not Just a Beautiful Mind” for Year 8 and 9 students while Year 10 students are able to study the single semester course, “On Newton’s Shoulders.” Entry into these courses is based on performance in both the school Mathematics curriculum and in previous Mathematics competitions.

What do we want our students to know?

At Sunshine Coast Grammar School, we believe Mathematics has the power to shape the future. Mathematics is a study of patterns and relationships.  It is the basis of many activities and assists us in developing strategies for managing time and money, interpreting data, working with measurements and studying patterns and relationships.

The subject of Mathematics encourages students to work systematically and logically, to conjecture and reflect, to justify and communicate, to raise confidence and provide a basis for a wide range of further studies and future endeavours.
