Sport at SCGS
Just as the Sunshine Coast Grammar School values cultural pursuits, so to do we place equal emphasis on the wonders of participating in the exercise of both mind and body. A wide range of sports, both team and individual is provided for our students.
Our teams have won Regional, State and Australian titles. The school also hosts several visiting interstate and overseas school teams during the course of each year. Likewise the Grammar also offers its students overseas sport tours, with a cricket tour to England, and a Rugby and Netball tour to New Zealand being our most recent trips.
The School considers that participation, teamwork, fitness, resolve and dedication are important. Therefore, we offer a myriad of activities that revolve around these life-long skills.
At our school we offer chances to compete in Athletics, Australian Rules Football, Basketball, Cheerleading, Cricket, Cross Country, Lawn Bowls, Netball, Royal Life Saving, Rugby Union, Sailing, Soccer, Sports Aerobics, Surfing, Surf Life Saving, Swimming, Tennis, Touch Football, Triathlon, and.
In addition to the SCISSA (Sunshine Coast Independent Schools Sports Association) competition sport held on Thursday afternoons for Year 4 – 7 students, and Friday afternoons for Year 8 – 12 students, there are also other local and State-wide inter-school competitions in AFL, Cricket, Hockey, Rugby Union and Soccer. The school also offers Recreational Sports where the emphasis is more on fun and fitness, rather than competition.
Recreational sports on offer vary from season to season, but include Lawn Bowls, Sailing, Sports Aerobics, Table Tennis, Tennis, Ten Pin Bowling and Yoga.
The school houses a Tennis School of Excellence, with its own courts, shop and coach, providing several up-and-coming players experience at local, State and National level tournaments. Graduates of our Tennis School of Excellence have now moved into the professional ranks.
Three major Inter-House sport carnivals are held each year in Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics where the prestigious Inter-House Trophy for each is very keenly fought over by the four school Houses of Bradman, Chisholm, Lawson and Sturt. Points from these carnivals, as well as points from other Inter-House sporting events (Tug-o’-War, Touch Football and Soccer), contribute towards the LinJac Trophy, awarded to the champion house each year.
Many other sporting options are also offered through the Sunshine Coast School Sport Board where talented students can be selected to represent not only their local zone, but go on to represent the Sunshine Coast, Queensland and even Australia, via State and National championships in a multitude of sports.
