Nearly a decade after first setting foot in Timor Leste as a student, Jess Simpson (Class of 2016) returned, this time as a qualified doctor and with a deepened sense of purpose. In an inspiring full-circle moment, her journey of service began on our inaugural visit to Timor Leste in 2015, and this year she returned with our Global Awareness and Servant Leadership group on our fifth tour. Jess’s journey back to the community of Maliana is a powerful reminder of the lifelong impact this experience can have.
Following the trip, Jess reflected on her connection to the Maliana community and the country that continues to shape her perspective.
“Seeing the community through a medical lens was eye-opening. I’m now working on projects I hope will improve healthcare outcomes in Timor Leste.”
Watching current Grammar students experience the tour for the first time stirred familiar emotions and an overwhelming sense of connection, friendship and gratitude for the simple things we often take for granted. One moment in particular stood out for Jess as she recalled teaching basic English to a six-year-old girl during her first visit to Encouragement House.
“Returning this year, I met with her mother, who told me she’s now studying an English degree. Hearing how she is transforming her life through opportunity was incredibly special.”
Reflecting on the importance of volunteering, Jess believes that giving back benefits both the community and the volunteer. Despite her demanding role as a paediatric doctor, Jess still makes time for volunteering, a value instilled in her from her time at Grammar. Jess participates in the Redcliffe Hospital Foundation fundraising events, creates craft activities for hospitalised children, and offers comfort to premature newborns who don’t have family present.
Jess’s journey is a powerful example of how passion and purpose can create meaningful change both locally and abroad. We are incredibly proud of Jess and all of our students, past and present, who continue to embrace the spirit of service.
