It is not uncommon for school students to be inspired to become teachers based on their experiences in school and the influence of their teachers. In fact, many teachers today can trace their career choice back to the positive impact that a particular teacher or school experience had on them.
Since graduating from Grammar in 20221, Declan Ryan has been studying a Bachelor of Secondary Education at QUT, a path inspired by the teachers and mentors who shaped his own school experience.
This year, he returned to Grammar in a new role, joining the Learning Enrichment team.
“It’s been surreal walking back through the Grammar gates. I feel lucky to be part of the community again.”
Declan’s connection to Grammar also extends to the sporting field. He was a proud member of the rugby program and has now stepped into a coaching role. His journey began last year with the U11 Grammar team, and he now leads the U12 squad alongside his brother Hunter while also managing the U16 Sunshine Coast Stingrays. One of the most rewarding experiences was guiding players through The Armidale School (TAS) rugby carnival, a tournament he once played in himself.
"I experienced firsthand the impact of quality coaching on my rugby journey and my development as a young man. Now, I get to pay this forward and do my best to make a difference in the lives of our young athletes.”
Declan credits many teachers for shaping his path, from lunchtime touch football sessions with Mr Cross to inspiring off-topic conversations with Mr Bessell during Year 12 Biology lessons. What stands out most to Declan is the way every student feels seen and valued, and this is a quality he now strives to carry forward in his own teaching and coaching.
Now, as a coach and an educator, Declan is helping shape the next generation and continuing the cycle of creating meaningful relationships where students feel empowered to become the best version of themselves.
