Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital technologies continue to transform the way we learn, communicate and connect. While these tools offer incredible opportunities, they also present challenges that require awareness, good judgement and open conversations.

This term, we welcomed cyber safety expert Susan McLean back to Grammar to speak with students in Years 5-11, parents and staff about child online safety, social media and the realities of growing up in an increasingly connected world.

Susan McLean is one of Australia's foremost cyber safety experts and a former Victoria Police officer. A pioneer in online safety, she has become a leading and trusted voice in helping children, families and schools navigate the digital world safely.

Throughout her sessions, Susan shared practical advice on the risks young people can encounter online, including cyberbullying, privacy concerns, online grooming, the exchange of inappropriate content and the misuse of personal information. She highlighted the importance of recognising the strategies used to target children through apps, gaming platforms and social media, while also providing practical steps families can take to stay safer online.

A key message from Susan's presentations was that doing nothing is not an option. Technology continues to evolve rapidly, while young people are still developing the skills and judgement needed to navigate a complex online world. Building awareness, encouraging open communication and establishing healthy digital habits are essential in supporting young people online.

If you were unable to attend, Susan's latest book, Growing Up Digital: Helping Your Kids and Teens Navigate Life Online, is a valuable resource for parents and educators. The book provides practical guidance on contemporary online risks and strategies to help young people develop safer and more resilient digital lives.

Thank you to Susan McLean for once again sharing her expertise with our community and helping students, parents and staff navigate the online world with greater confidence and awareness.
