As part of National Volunteer Week, we recognise the invaluable contribution of our Parents & Friends’ Association (P&F) and the role they play in strengthening the Sunshine Coast Grammar community.

We recently sat down with our P&F President, Ellie O’Hara to learn more about her passion for volunteering and the impact it has had across her life. Ellie has an extensive background in volunteering, having been heavily involved in the agricultural show movement across both NSW and Queensland. Her contributions have included chairing the Queensland Country Life Showgirl Awards and supporting the Queensland Rural Ambassador Awards at the Ekka.

Reflecting on her motivation to volunteer, Ellie shared, “Volunteering is such a meaningful way to connect with others and give back. Being part of the P&F has allowed me to contribute to a community that actively shapes my family and creates opportunities for our students.”

Across her journey, she has created many memorable experiences, including the unique opportunity to attend an international conference and meet Princess Anne, but she reflects that it is ultimately the impact on others and the sense of community that remain most meaningful.

“I love the people that you connect with when they have a passion for contributing to something bigger than ourselves. The P&F is an amazing example of this.”

Her advice for aspiring volunteers is simple but powerful: Initiative is key — stepping up, even in small ways, can make a big difference.

“Without volunteers, our communities would lack connection and purpose. The experiences I’ve gained have been incredibly meaningful and have taught me so much about communication, leadership and working with others.”

We are incredibly grateful to Ellie and all of our P&F volunteers for their generosity and commitment in building a strong, connected Grammar community.
