Sunshine Coast Grammar School’s robotics team the Iron Lions has achieved success at the FIRST Tech Challenge National Championships in Sydney, earning the team an invitation to represent Australia at the World Championships in the USA in April.

The Iron Lions, consisting of three students and two recent 2025 Grammar graduates, will now join four other Australian teams and approximately 15,000 attendees, to compete at the FIRST Tech Challenge World Championships in Houston, Texas.

Sunshine Coast Grammar School’s Head of Digital Innovation, Mr Justin Pembroke and Head of Extended Learning, Mrs Brenda Gahan, have played a pivotal role in guiding the teams throughout the season.

Mr Pembroke said the results reflect the school’s outstanding reputation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.

“Our robotics program has grown stronger every year and these recent results reflect how capable our students have become. Their commitment to learning, experimenting and pushing their designs further has been outstanding,” said Mr Pembroke.

“It’s a proud moment for our school and the robotics program and we are looking forward to helping the Iron Lions prepare for the world stage,” added Mr Pembroke.

In addition to the Iron Lions, two other Sunshine Coast Grammar School teams have been recognised for their strong performance at the National Championships and received invitations to compete at the European Championships.

Sunshine Coast Grammar School Principal, Mrs Anna Owen, said the achievement is a reflection of the school’s commitment to future-focused learning.

“We educate young people to be designers and creators of technology, not just passive users of technology,” said Mrs Owen.

Sunshine Coast Grammar School is proud to support all teams as they build on their success and represent the school, region and the country on the international stage.
