Sunshine Coast Grammar School’s robotics team, the Iron Lions, has returned from the FIRST Tech Challenge World Championships in Houston with an outstanding debut performance, placing fourth and 25th in their competitions.
Competing against 358 teams from 33 countries, the Iron Lions demonstrated advanced technological skills in a highly competitive international field. The team finished 25th out of 57 teams in their division following the qualifying rounds.
A standout moment came when the Iron Lions were selected by the seventh seed alliance captain to compete in the playoff matches. Their alliance progressed strongly throughout the finals series, finishing a strong fourth in the division.
Sunshine Coast Grammar School Head of Digital Innovation, Mr Justin Pembroke, said the result reflects the strength of the school’s STEM program, as well as the dedication, innovation and impressive skills of the students.
“This achievement is a testament to the team’s creativity and perseverance. They have represented Australia and Sunshine Coast Grammar School with distinction at the highest level of competition,” Mr Pembroke said.
The World Championships marked the culmination of a remarkable season for the Iron Lions, who qualified for the international event following strong results at the FIRST Tech Challenge National Championships earlier this year.
Sunshine Coast Grammar School Principal, Mrs Anna Owen, said the team’s success highlights the importance of future-focused learning.
“We are incredibly proud of the Iron Lions. Their achievements demonstrate what is possible when students are encouraged to be creators, innovators and problem-solvers,” Mrs Owen said.
The Iron Lions’ success reinforces Sunshine Coast Grammar School’s commitment to excellence in STEM education and to providing students with opportunities to compete and succeed on a global stage.
