Grammar Rugby announces former All Blacks winger as Head Coach

Sunshine Coast Grammar School is excited to announce the appointment of former All Blacks winger, Hosea Gear as the Head Rugby Coach who will start under the direction of returning Grammar Director of Rugby, Dan Robotham, in 2021.

Gear will join Grammar to continue to strengthen and develop a new era of rugby at the School as they prepare to launch the Sunshine Coast Grammar Rugby Academy in the new year.

Gear, who played 14 tests for the All Blacks from 2008-12, left the Chiefs for France in 2015 signing to play for Toulouse in the Top 14. He finished playing two years later and turned to coaching with third division French club Céret Sportif.  Most recently, Gear has been working as the Heartland Head Coach at Ngati Porou East Coast in New Zealand.

A firm believer in culture, Gear is passionate and enthusiastic about teaching and coaching.  He is known for always striving for excellence and is determined to help young players reach their maximum potential.

A dominant force in rugby on the Sunshine Coast, Grammar has gone from strength to strength and in 2020 took out the Sunshine Coast Secondary Schools Rugby Union Premiership for the third consecutive year and winning their eighth title in the previous nine years.

“The Sunshine Coast Grammar School Rugby program has continued to deliver excellent results over the years and the time has come to step it up a notch and take it to the next level,” said returning Director of Rugby Dan Robotham.

“We are starting to see a strong sevens competition emerge as well as a growing interest in girls rugby and we are keen to develop these programs further.”

“The focus of the Rugby Academy will be to deliver an outstanding rugby program and skill development opportunities for students on the Sunshine Coast, while fostering a strong culture of excellence.”

Grammar has produced a pool of talented Rugby players over the years including former Wallabies and ACT Brumbies lock Blake Enever and most recently the talented Queensland Reds scrumhalf Tate McDermott who is currently in the Wallabies squad for the Bledisloe Cup and Rugby Championships.

“We are excited to be launching the Sunshine Coast Grammar Rugby Academy and Hosea Gear’s appointment will be welcomed by all in the local rugby community,” said Mr Robotham.
