As National Volunteer Week unfolds, we take the time to acknowledge and celebrate the individuals who dedicate their time and energy to making a difference in their communities. Today, we shine a spotlight on two outstanding volunteers, past students, brothers and dedicated rugby coaches — Hunter and Declan Ryan.
From students to mentors, Hunter and Declan have embraced the opportunity to give back to the Sunshine Coast Grammar School rugby community, a program that played a significant role in shaping their own journeys. Their passion for education and sport has guided them towards coaching and mentoring young athletes and now they volunteer together, coaching the U12 Grammar rugby union team.
Since graduating in 2019, Hunter has pursued studies in Business and Education, ultimately finding his passion in teaching and coaching. Now studying a Bachelor of Education (Secondary) at QUT, he volunteers his time coaching the U12 Grammar rugby union team alongside his brother. Hayden finds fulfillment in seeing young players grow and his favourite memory is coaching them during the U12 Armidale tour this year.
“For me, coaching has reinforced my passion for working with young people and is helping me develop vital skills for my future in teaching,” shared Hunter.
Declan, who graduated in 2021, is also completing a Bachelor of Secondary Education at QUT. His coaching journey began last year with the U11 Grammar team, and he now leads the U12 squad with Hunter while also managing the U16 Sunshine Coast Stingrays. His most rewarding experience was guiding players through the TAS carnival in Armidale, a tournament he once played in himself.
“I experienced firsthand the impact of volunteers on my rugby journey and my development as a young man. Now, I get to pay this forward and do my best to make a difference in the lives of our young athletes,” said Declan.
Shaped by firsthand experience, Hunter and Declan’s commitment to coaching strengthens the Grammar rugby community and serves as a powerful inspiration for the next generation of players. Thank you, Hunter and Declan, for dedicating your time, passion and expertise to mentoring and coaching the next generation.
