Volunteering is more than just lending a helping hand. It is about building connections, fostering community spirit and leading by example. For Kerryn Nelson and her son Nate (Year 6), giving back is a way of life. Their journey demonstrates how families can work side by side to create meaningful change and shows that service can be a shared commitment.
Kerryn’s passion for volunteering started early, raising money for the Good Friday Appeal as a child and rallying family and friends to support the Royal Children’s Hospital as a teenager. That same drive continues today, with her involvement in organizing fundraisers, serving as Treasurer for our P&F, assisting in planning the recent Regional Queensland da Vinci Decathlon and supporting STEPS Pathways College in numerous ways. Whether leading major events or quietly lending a hand behind the scenes, Kerryn exemplifies the true spirit of service.
Inspired by his mother’s dedication, Nate has embraced the role of giving back with the same enthusiasm. His commitment to volunteering led him to be named the first Youth Ambassador for STEPS Pathways College and awarded Student of the Year by Federal Member for Fisher, Andrew Wallace in 2024. Since 2023, he has raised over $15,000 for STEPS Pathways, walking 21km in 2023 and 30km in 2024 alongside local radio station 92.7 MixFM to support individuals with disabilities. Most recently, he attended Ready STEPS Cook, where he witnessed firsthand the impact of the College’s programs.
Together, Kerryn and Nate embody the essence of National Volunteer Week, proving that when families work together, their collective efforts ripple through the community, creating lasting change. Their story showcases that leading with kindness and a shared commitment to service can build stronger families, stronger communities and a brighter future.
